Singapore - Yesterday was a big day for 12 secondary one students from 3 of Singapore's most highly respected high schools: Hwa Chong Institution, Singapore Chinese Girls' School and Nanyang Girls' High School. They overcame one of the world's greatest fears - speaking in public - to compete in the Grand Finals of the 3NGLES (Triangles) student speaking competition.
The students competed in front of their school pricipals and approximately 150 classmates. The guest of honour was Mr. Goh Eck Kheng, Chairman of the Speak Good English Campaign in Singapore. Heather Hansen of Hansen Communication Lab Pte Ltd was honourable guest judge along with two of the students' teachers.
"On behalf of the judges, I must say that we were thoroughly impressed," said Ms. Hansen before the winners were announced. "The skills that you have learned throughout participating in this competition will serve you well throughout your lives, in any occupation you choose to pursue."
Ms. Hansen participated in her first speaking competition when she was almost 12 years old. This experience piqued her interest in public speaking and put her on course to win over 120 awards and over US $20,000 (approx. SG $30,000) in scholarships - all before her 18th birthday.
The 3NGLES students (24 in total) went through a 3-hour workshop with Ms. Hansen in preparation for the semi-finals competition. Ms. Hansen said, "This is the second year I've volunteered to work with the students as they prepare for the 3NGLES speech competition. I love working with the students. I feel like it's my way of giving back, and hopefully igniting in them the same passion I have for confident communication."
